”I’m not a big word fan”: An exploratory study of ninth-graders’ language use in the context of word consciousness-oriented vocabulary instruction. $49.99 In this instrumental case study (Stake, 2005), I explored students’ construction of literate identities against the backdrop of word consciousness-oriented (Scott, Skobel, & Wells, 2008; Scott & Nagy, 2004; Stahl & Nagy, 2006) vocabulary instruction in their ninth-grade English class. In particular, I examined how the two focal participants’ identity construction influenced their positioning of themselves as vocabulary experts within and outside their ninth-grade English class. Data collection included 29 interviews with 10 student participants; 8 interviews with the classroom teacher; and 36 hours of classroom observations over four months. Analyses of the data suggested that the focal participants took important strides toward ownership (Stahl & Nagy, 2006) of the vocabulary they encountered during the study and during their reading outside of school, but that their willingness to position themselves as vocabulary experts appeared to be influenced by the local, institutional, and societal contexts (Fairclough, 1995) of their lives. Specifically, Matt demonstrated expertise in the local and institutional contexts, but accepted the position of “the dumb one” assigned to him by the people in his societal context. Beth declined to demonstrate her vocabulary expertise in the institutional context, but reveled in her power in the societal context. These data suggest that, as researchers investigate how to bring what we know about effective vocabulary instruction in the earlier grades to secondary settings, we must include consideration of the complexity of adolescent identity. During a period when computer consumption was restricted to the military and corporate industry, rhetorical strategies used to describe computers as artifacts involved associations with things and ideas already common knowledge to readers and viewers. Hardy studies has a long history of pigeon-holing Hardy as the simple archivist of rural Wessex, but when new versions of Hardy appear in our literary culture, such as Simmonds's novel, they shine new light on the author, often reaffirming certain Hardy-esque qualities, but also revealing connections that may have long been hidden from readers' views because of the overwhelming power of that rural Hardy. This thesis is an effort to reveal some of those connections, to point out where the traces of new "Hardys" exist in old "Hardys" and where the old Hardy continues to hang on. A Foucauldian Analysis of Power in Nursing Education $82 Foucault has been an important contributor to our understanding of powerlessness. As a nurse, I have experienced powerlessness and have been intrigued that professionals who have so much power to heal could feel so powerless in their practice. My own experience as a student nurs introduced me to the disciplinary power described by Foucault, although, at the time, I could not name it. After reading Foucault, I was intrigued to apply his vision of power to nursing education. The voices of nursing students brought this to light. This work turned out to be much more complex than I thought it would be. To find the power gradients in nursing education I had to start with the students and their own images of nursing as well as those portrayed in the media. From there, we explored the students experiences as students. Finally, using Foucault, I have ‘tried to provide some ways to produce cracks and crevices and conduits in nursing education as usual, to raise up students who have not only power to heal, but power to advocate for both themselves and those for whom they care. |
