Private Lending

So G Brown, is taking money from me, lending it to private banks to lend it back to me at a profit – justice?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7301163.stm
Why is Brown taking money of the british taxpayer, to lend to private banks to lend back to the taxpayer (at a profit)?
No wonder the government never realise any ‘efficiency’ or ‘productivity’ gains — the stupid fat, snot muncher should just leave the money with the tax payer and cut out the middle men (himself included) – shouldn’t he?
It’s a Brown Robin. I think that’s why he has trouble with his tongue, it’s partly worn away licking fingers before counting money.

Agriculture Investment Sourcebook $49.99 Investing to promote agricultural growth and poverty reduction is a central pillar of the World Bank’s current rural strategy, Reaching the Rural Poor (2003). One major thrust of the strategy outlines the priorities and the approaches that the public sector, private sector, and civil society can employ to enhance productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector in ways that reduce the rural poverty and sustain the natural resource base. These actions involve a rich mixture of science, technology, people, communication, management, learning, research, capacity building, institutional development, and grassroots participation. This Sourcebook addresses how to implement the rural strategy, by sharing information on investment options and identifying innovative approaches that will aid the design of future lending programs for agriculture. It provides generic good practices and many examples that demonstrate investment in agriculture can provide rewarding and sustainable returns to development efforts. It is divided into eleven self-contained modules. Each module contains three different types of subunits that can also be stand-alone documents: I. Module Overview, II. Agricultural Investment Notes, III. Innovative Activity Profiles. The stand-alone nature of the subunits allows flexibility and adaptability of the material, as well selected readings and web links are provided for readers who seek more in-depth information. The Sourcebook draws on a wide range of experience from donor agencies, governments, institutions, and other groups active in agricultural development. It is an invaluable reference tool for policy makers, professionals, academics and students, andanyone with an interest in agricultural investments. |

Athenian Economy and Society: A Banking Perspective $20.98 In this ground-breaking analysis of the world’s first private banks, Edward Cohen convincingly demonstrates the existence and functioning of a market economy in ancient Athens while revising our understanding of the society itself. Challenging the “primitivistic” view, in which bankers are merely pawnbrokers and money-changers, Cohen reveals that fourth-century Athenian bankers pursued sophisticated transactions. These dealings–although technologically far removed from modern procedures–were in financial essence identical with the lending and deposit-taking that separate true “banks” from other businesses. He further explores how the Athenian banks facilitated tax and creditor avoidance among the wealthy, and how women and slaves played important roles in these family businesses–thereby gaining legal rights entirely unexpected in a society supposedly dominated by an elite of male citizens.Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of Athenian cognitive patterns in financial practices. Cohen shows how transactions were affected by the complementary opposites embedded in the very structure of Athenian language and thought. In turn, his analysis offers great insight into daily Athenian reality and cultural organization. |

Beyond Lending: How Multilateral Banks Can Help Developing Countries Manage Volatility $13.27 When he began this book in early 2008, Guillermo Perry argued that developing countries remained highly vulnerable to external risks such as commodity price declines, capital flow reversals, and natural disasters. The economic crisis that has since ensued confirmed Perry’s analysis. It has also made his proposal more important than ever: multilateral development banks (MDBs) should move beyond lending to provide innovative risk-management tools for developing countries to manage volatility. The risk that MDBs will fall into complacency as the short-term demand for traditional loans increases during the crisis should not deter innovations to ensure long-term stability. Contents1. Causes and Consequences of High Volatility in Developing Countries2. The Role of Financial Insurance and Hedging 3. Dealing with Liquidity Shocks and the Procyclicality of Private Capital Flows 4. Dealing with Currency Risks5. Dealing with Commodity Price, Terms of Trade, and Output Risks6. Dealing with Natural Disaster Risks 7. Why Multilateral Development Bank Practices Are So Far from Their Potential8. An Agenda Going Forward |

The difficulty of publishing special examples is obvious, but in May last I quoted three palmary instances affecting MSS. borrowed by private persons; and the argument applies a fortiori to the cases which will be created by the present proposals, because in the former case the borrower is usually bound by a distinct declaration or bond, and in any case is exceptionally on his honour. Yet in all those three instances, distinguished graduates of the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge shamefully neglected the clear path of duty—nay, of ordinary honest dealing. In an Institution part of the responsibility is borne by it, and the borrower will feel less personally bound. And while the history of the Union Library is what it is, and while we can read Henry Bradshaw’s ‘ History of the University Library at Cambridge’ or even Macray’s ‘Annals of the Bodleian,’ no one can seriously impugn my contention, that injury will be done to the Library by undue laxity in carrying out the provisions of the Statute. The Statute unnecessary. I hope that my readers will even now so far agree with me as to feel that a very strong case ought to be made out for the Statute, if it is not to be rejected. Unwilling as I should be to overstate my case I yet confidently ask them to believe that this Statute is actually unnecessary, and unnecessary, so to speak, all round. First, there is a perfect wealth of subsidiary libraries in Oxford. There are probably 400,000printed books in libraries other than private collections. Very well; even if up to now those books do not supply the defect—that is, copies of books whose place can easily be supplied, at the disposal of borrowers—yet the forces, |

Capital Flows and Financial Crises $1.13 Used – Capital flows to the developing economies have long displayed a boom-and-bust pattern. However, rarely has the cycle turned as abruptly as it did in the 1990s, when the surges in lending were followed by the Mexican peso crisis of 1994-95, and the sudden collapse of currencies in Asia in 1997 and 1998. The volume maps an uncertain financial landscape in which volatile private capital flows and fragile banking systems produce sudden reversals of fortune for governments and economies. This |

Challenges and the future of the Public-Privat Partnership in Albania $86.99 Today it is clearly evident that the governments, of every level, cannot complete all the growing needs of the population for the main services, by acting alone. The need for asking support from another sector, for the completions of these services constitutes the necessity for a collaboration with the private sector. The partnership of the public sector with the private one, is one of the most promising forms for resolving different problems. This collaboration aims at recognizing the benefits that those two sectors can have, from the financial resources, the experience and professional knowledge of the base public services, aimed for the whole citizens. The actors of the private sector can be different investors, financial lending institutions, as well as companies that offer the construction and the operational service. The actors of the public sector are the public authorities that design and implement the policies of a PPP, as well as those authorities that procure the funds for the financing of the PPP agreement, while not forgetting the general public who uses the assets that are offered by the PPP. |

Excerpt: Greater Victoria Public Library – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Prior to 1864, Victoria was served by at least two small, private lending libraries. In 1858, for instance, The Gazette described a library and reading room opened by a Mr W. F. Herre. This private library, located in the Hibben and Carswell Building on Yates Street near the corner of Wharf Street, was “fitted up in a very neat and comfortable style…”. It was, the writer conceded, “yet limited, but so soon as the books can be obtained from San Francisco, will be greatly enlarged.” The writer further explained that Mr Herre’s library “filled a much needed want of the town”. Another early librarythat of the British Columbia division of the T. Eaton Companywas started in 1862 by department store manager David Spencer. On December 16, 1864 the local Mechanics’ Institute created Victoria’s first community-oriented lending library. Located on Bastion Street, the library’s collection included books donated by James Douglas (Governor). The Institute’s rooms were “well lighted and warmed, and with their copious supply of reading matter, one of the pleasantest places in the city in which to pass a quiet hour.” In October, 1886, the Mechanics’ Institute informed Victoria’s city council that it intended to wind up its affairs and offered the book collection to the City. A referendum followed, and a majority of votersfearing increased taxesrejected the proposal as an unnece… More: |

Economies in Transition: An OED Evaluation of World Bank Assistance (Operations Evaluation Studies) $7.5 “The transition economies of the Europe and Central Asia Region faced unprecedented political, economic, and social change after the break-up of the Soviet Union. With assistance from the World Bank and other donors, many countries quickly accomplished a number of reforms, but progress in others has been slower. Much has been achieved – the private share of GDP in the transition countries is nearly 70 percent, and 8 countries have joined the EU – but much remains to be completed.Economies in Transition assesses the effectiveness of Bank assistance to the transition, focusing particularly on five topics: 1) private sector development; 2) governance, public sector management, and institution-building; 3) the financial sector; 4) social protection; and 5) energy. Overall Bank assistance has been successful, but there were mistakes before the true nature of transition was fully understood. The Bank internalized the emerging lessons and shifted its emphasis accordingly. This study highlights the importance of lending at prudent levels until a solid knowledge base is established, with convincing evidence of government and societal ownership of the assistance program. It contends that analysis of governance and poverty monitoring should be early features of the assistance program, active programs of stakeholder inclusion should be widely replicated, and country assistance strategies used to bolster reform capacity.” |

Essays on institutions, financial development, and economic growth. $49.99 A number of recent papers using a linear specification have indicated that private property institutions are a fundamental determinant of growth. In my first paper, I use a semi-nonparametric partially linear model to provide evidence against a linear specification and to support nonlinearities in the relationship. The findings indicate that the exogenous component of private property institutions contributes positively to economic growth for countries in the lower and middle stages of private property institutions and have a negative relationship with economic growth of countries having the highest level of private property institutions. These results are confirmed when using an appropriate parametric specification and estimation by GMM. When using different measures of private property institutions as the ‘rule of law’ and ‘political freedom’, the results are consistent.;The second paper documents a nonlinear relationship between financial development and income inequality across developing and developed countries, and uncovers the empirical root of this phenomenon. The source is in two parts: there is a close relationship between the level of economic development and the level of financial development across countries; and the impact of financial development on income inequality is contingent on the level of economic development.;The 1990s saw considerable economic turbulence due to varying degrees of financial crisis in many countries in Asia and Latin America. In the third paper, I document that a combination of external shocks, weak institutional background and excessive bank lending contributed to the differential responses by countries to financial crisis. Using a version of the models of Bernanke and Gertler (1990) and Jensen and Meckling (1976), the paper builds a theoretical model to show that institutional problems, coupled with external shocks, can affect the capital structure of firms and lead to a choice of projects having low net present value, |

Free Banking $56 Free banking is a theory of banking in which market forces control the provision of banking services, where there is no central bank to protect commercial banks from bank runs and where money production is unregulated by government. Under free banking, government-supported central banks and currency boards do not exist, banking-specific government regulations are either non-existent or not as strict, and general commercial laws against fraud, insolvency and bankruptcy apply to banks as they apply to other commercial entities. Unregulated banking services may include the provision of full reserve banking services, bank note issuance by private institutions (which could be backed by the liquid assets of the bank or by gold or silver), cheque accounts, deposit acceptance, and/or money lending. |

Gothic Architecture $74 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Gothic architecture is a style of architecture which flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. Originating in 12th century France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic architecture was known during the period as “the French Style” (Opus Francigenum), with the term Gothic first appearing during the latter part of the Renaissance. Its characteristic features include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and parish churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings. It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeal to the emotions. |

Housing America: Building Out of a Crisis $93.85 Housing policy not only affects all Americans quality of life, but has a direct impact on their financial well being. About 70 percent of American households own their own homes, and for most, their homes represent the majority of their net worth. Renters are affected by housing policy. Even the small minority of Americans who are homeless are affected by housing policies specifically targeted to low-income individuals. The governments increasing involvement in housing markets, fed by popular demand that government"do something" to address real problems of mortgage defaults and loans, provides good reason to take a new look at the public sector in housing markets. Crises in prime mortgage lending may lower the cost of housing, but the poor and homeless cannot benefit because of increases in unemployment. Even the private market is heavily regulated. Government policies dictate whether people can build new housing on their land, what type of housing they can build, the terms allowed in rental contracts, and much more. This volume considers the effects of government housing policies and what can be done to make them work better. It shows that many problems are the result of government rules and regulations. Even in a time of foreclosures, the market can still do a crucial a job of allocating resources, just as it does in other markets. Consequently, the appropriate policy response may well be to significantly reduce, not increase, government presence in housing markets. Housing America is a courageous and comprehensive effort to examine housing policies in the United States and to show how such policies affect the housing market. |

How to Get Private Business Loans; Findi $8.29 This book explains how to borrow money from people, companies or investors who do not typically require detailed loan submission and approval processes. Generally, private lending requires less formal processes and has different and potentially lower lending criteria requirements than those from traditional lending institutions such as banks and venture capital firms. This book was created to help startup business and small entrepreneurs obtain funds for the startup and initial expansion of their businesses. It was created from actual experiences of finding private lenders, creating the necessary materials and communicating with potential lenders, creating the loan agreements and following up to obtain the checks.Traditional lending institutions have a difficult time evaluating intellectual and business capital that small startup businesses may have or are in the process of creating. As a result, small business owners are typically ignored or even avoided by traditional lenders such as banks. When seeking private business loans, it is helpful to know how to identify and meet potential private lenders. Private lenders range from family and friends with limited amounts of money to wealthy people. Once you have identified potential lenders, you will want to communicate with them in a way that motivates them to listen to you (the first achievement) and to potentially lend money to you or give you names of other people who may lend money to you. This book helps you to learn effective ways to communicate with private lenders along with methods that help to motivate private lenders to respond and take action. Included are sample scripts of discussions with potential lenders. While it is not recommended that you use these sample scripts exactly as they appear in this book, they should help you to develop your own styles and scripts. You will discover how it can be beneficial to have a story to tell on why you need the money, how you plan to |

Information technology and rural market performance in central India. $49.99 How do improvements in information impact market performance? This dissertation examines the effect of an innovative initiative launched by a private company in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Beginning in October 2000, it set up 1700 Internet kiosks and 45 warehouses that provide wholesale price information and an alternative marketing channel to soybean farmers in the state. I develop a theoretical model of this intervention and estimate the impact using a new market-level dataset with spatial geo-coded information. The causal effect is isolated by exploiting the variation in the timing of the introduction of kiosks and warehouses across districts of the state. The estimates suggest an immediate and significant increase in the monthly wholesale market price of soybeans after the introduction of kiosks, lending support to the predictions of the theoretical model. While the presence of warehouses appears to have no effect on price, warehouses are associated with a dramatic reduction in the volume of sales in the traditional markets. Moreover, there is a significant increase in the area under soy cultivation. The estimates are robust to disaggregated measures of treatment and comparisons with alternative crops grown in the same season as soy. The analysis suggests that information can substantially enhance the functioning of rural markets by increasing the competitiveness of buyers. |

Islamic Banking $88.11 Islamic banking refers to a system of banking or banking activity that is consistent with the principles of Islamic law (Sharia) and its practical application through the development of Islamic economics. Sharia prohibits the payment or acceptance of interest fees for the lending and accepting of money respectively, (Riba, usury) for specific terms, as well as investing in businesses that provide goods or services considered contrary to its principles (Haraam, forbidden). While these principles were used as the basis for a flourishing economy in earlier times, it is only in the late 20th century that a number of Islamic banks were formed to apply these principles to private or semi-private commercial institutions within the Muslim community. |

Mexico s Financial Crisis $61 The reasons of Mexico´s financial crisis can be assessed by considering economic, financial and political reasons during the period 1988-1994. The political economy of Carlos Salinas’ administration (1988-1994) was based on a policy of openness and stability for foreign investors. From 1994 Mexico had started to have a close contact with foreign markets. The Central Bank of Mexico had four elements to defend the Mexican exchange rate. The first was the scheme of bands that was kept until December 1994 to engender certainty in the financial markets. The second element was to increase interest rates. The third element was to use Mexico’s international currency reserves. The fourth element was to issue tesobonos. The flaws in Mexico’s political economy were associated with the issuance of tesobonos, the collapse of a semi-fixed exchange rate, current account deficit, domestic political shocks, excessive lending from commercial banks to the private sector and the lack of a consistent exchange rate adjustment programme from the Central Bank. |

Chapters: Artis, Rijksmuseum Van Natuurlijke Historie, Teylers Museum, Drents Museum, Naturalis, Maastricht Natural History Museum. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum of Natural History) was a museum in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was founded in 1820 by Royal Decree, formed from a merger of several existing collections. This happened at the instigation of Coenraad Jacob Temminck, who saw the museum primarily as a research institute. There was also a relationship with the University of Leiden. The total collection was already quite large and has grown further over the next 150 years, mainly through regular foreign expeditions and by obtaining private collections from inheritances. A public museum was however, not present until 1976, although from 1820 to 1913 was the museum normally opened to the public on Sundays. In 1913 the museum moved to a new building, with very little room available for exhibits, and in 1950 this room was also closed. Since then, there have been only a few visitors, on for guided tours, lectures and rare, temporary exhibitions. In 1976, a paper, “Towards a New Museum”, was produced. This led to that the museum taking on more of a central curating role, lending pieces from its collection to other museums. The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie and the Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie merged in 1984 . A permanent public exhibition was still not present. That came only when in 1986 the so-called “National Presentation” in the field of natural history was commissioned by the Dutch government. Planning began for a new building, which was completed in 1990 and launched in 1998 as “Naturalis”. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15318543 |

Oscar Wilde $23 In this elegant and affectionate biography of one of the most controversial personalities of the nineteenth century, Barbara Belford breaks new ground in the evocation of Oscar Wilde’s personal life and in our understanding of the choices he made for his art. Published for the centenary of Wilde’s death, here is a fresh, full-scale examination of the author of The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray, a figure not only full of himself but enjoying life to the fullest. Based on extensive study of original sources and animated throughout by historical detail, anecdote, and insight, the narrative traces Wilde’s progression from his childhood in an intellectual Irish household to his maturity as a London author to the years of his European exile. Here is Wilde the Oxford Aesthete becoming the talk of London, going off to tour America, lecturing on the craftsmanship of Cellini to the silver miners of Colorado, condemning the ugliness of cast-iron stoves to the ladies of Boston. Here is the domestic Wilde, building sandcastles with his sons, and the generous Wilde, underwriting the publication of poets, lending and spending with no thought of tomorrow. And here is the romantic Wilde, enthralled with Lord Alfred Douglas in an affair that thrived on laughter, smitten with Florence Balcombe, flirting with Violet Hunt, obsessed with Lillie Langtry, loving Constance, his wife. Vividly evoked are the theatres, clubs, restaurants, and haunts that Wilde made famous. More than previous accounts, Belford’s biography evaluates Wilde’s homosexuality as not just a private matter but one connected to the politics and culture of the 1890s. Wilde’s timeless observations, whichmake him the most quoted playwright after Shakespeare, are seamlessly woven into the life, revealing a man of remarkable intellect, energy, and warmth. Too often portrayed as a tragic figure–persecuted, imprisoned, sent into exile, and shunned–Wilde emerges from this intuitive por |

Moving beyond the usual academic emphasis on international agreements and institutions, it strives to integrate debates within the real world of global policy and the academic world of theory. The book maps out an original typology of four contrasting worldviews of environmental change — those of market liberals, institutionalists, bioenvironmentalists, and social greens — and uses these as a framework to examine the links between the global political economy and ecological change. This typology not only helps students understand and participate in debates about these worldviews but also provides a common language for students and instructors to discuss the issues across the social sciences. The book covers globalization and its consequences for the environment; the evolution of global discourse and global environmental governance; wealth, poverty, and consumption; the impact on the environment of global trade and trade agreements; transnational corporations and differential environmental standards; and the environmental effects of international financing, including multilateral lending and aid and bilateral and private finance. Brief, illustrative case studies appear throughout the text. |

Excerpt: DonorsChoose (run from donorschoose.org ) is a United States based nonprofit organization that provides a way for people to donate directly to specific projects at public schools (sometimes known as peer-to-peer philanthropy). DonorsChoose.org was started in 2000 by Charles Best, a teacher at a public high school in the Bronx. Since then, it has grown to serve all the public schools throughout the United States. As of February 2008, more than $20 million dollars had been donated to over 45,000 projects, helping more than 1,100,000 students in need. The organization collects proposals from teachers and makes them available to public schools through its website. Individual donors can select projects and contribute as much as they are prepared to. DonorsChoose.org then purchases necessary supplies and provides them to the schools, and generates a line-item budget which is sent to the donor. In addition, donors who contribute $100 or more to a project, or who complete the funding for a project, also receive a “feedback package” of thank-you notes from students, photographs of the project, and a letter from the teacher. DonorsChoose.org is supported by fulfillment costs optionally added to each donation, as well as private funding sources, such as Omidyar Network . DonorsChoose.org appeared in a Doonesbury strip on September 9, 2007. It was also mentioned in an interview with Craig Newmark on the October 18, 2007 episode of the Colbert Report , and again on March 19, 2008. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware & Maryland In Fiction, 1792-2000 $14.18 Gustave Flaubert said that novels are the private histories of nations. The philosopher Richard Rorty contended that novelists and poets can shed more light than philosophy on the human condition. Fiction as history has been the theme of several recent publications. In his The Role of Place in Literature (1984) Leonard Lutwack stated: “The most elementary orientation of a reader to a narrative text is through the implication of place. Setting is immediately positive and reassuring until action and characters are gradually unfolded.” It is with such reflections that the present volume and its two predecessors have been compiled. This is the final volume of a trilogy covering the fiction of New England, New York State and the other four Middle Atlantic states. The impetus for the present work (as for its predecessors) is the premise that creative writers, novelists especially, have nearly as much to tell us about the way we lived in the early years of our country as the historians and social scientists. Fiction as history has become a subject of research in recent years. The annotations in this bibliography are often quite extensive, covering many hard-to-find, long forgotten works, lending themselves to browsing by the general reader. |

Policies and Private Investment $77.99 There is no shortage of books and studies that regard investment as an important catalyst for accelerated economic development. As a result, developing countries that are ambitious for economic prosperity are strongly encouraged to prioritize investment in their national development strategy. There is often little information on which policies and their magnitude of change that can be most effective in a particular context. Using the Malawian economy, this book provides a timely insight into what fiscal and monetary policies can achieve with respect to a least developed economy. A modified neoclassical model estimated by the linear Generalised Method of Moments and panel data is used to derive important findings on the impact of government consumption, public infrastructure, corporate tax, lending rates and corporate tax on private investment. The analysis provides useful insight into modern investment modeling, econometric estimation techniques, policy results and should be useful to policy makers, professionals and scholars in development related institutions across the world. |

Psyche’s Task: A Discourse Concerning the Influence of Superstition $27.93 According to Frazer, superstition may have been responsible for some terrible misunderstandings and even worse misdeeds, but in lending strength to the core institutions of government, private property, marriage, and respect for human life, superstition has played an invaluable role in the increased civility of man. Surely it is better, he asserts, that men should do right from wrong motives than that they should do wrong with the best intentions. A treat for students of history and social anthropology, Psyche’’s Task is a lively, informative defense from the author of the influential The Golden Bough.Scottish anthropologist SIR JAMES GEORGE FRAZER (1854-1941) also wrote Man, God, and Immortality (1927) and Creation and Evolution in Primitive Cosmogonies (1935). |

Public Libraries In British Columbia $10.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. A referendum followed, and a majority of votersfearing increased taxesrejected the proposal as an unnecessary “frill.” The books, however, were purchased by Mayor James Fell (with personal funds) and kept in storage. A subsequent vote, held little more than a year later, resulted in the City’s acceptance of the books and the beginning of Greater Victoria’s first truly public library. In 1889, the Mechanics’ Institute co… More: |

Reforms in Credit Market, Performance of Crops and Capital Formation $75.99 This book is related to the reforms in credit market and private capital formation in agriculture. Various reforms have taken place to improve the outreach of credit institutions. In 1904, first phase of institutional credit delivery system started with the introduction of co-operatives. Regional and Global Capital Flows: Macroeconomic Causes and Consequences $39 The volume of capital flows between industrial and developing countries has grown dramatically in the past decade and has become a major issue in a world that is increasingly globalized. In this book, Takatoshi Ito and Anne O. Krueger, two leading experts on this topic, have assembled a group of scholars who address different types of capital flows-bank lending, bonds, direct foreign investment-and the implications they hold for economic performance. By concentrating on macroeconomic issues concerning the flow of private capital to and from the East Asian economies during the currency crises of 1997, the commentary aims to help policy makers avoid such crises in the future. The analyses undertaken here deal with a variety of questions, focusing especially on the “economic fundamentals” of the affected economies and on the irrational “herd behavior” of investors. With its particular focus on the Asian financial crises, this work presents a new model in thinking about the role of private capital flows for policy makers everywhere. |

Excerpt: Seth Walchand Hirachand Doshi (23 November 1882 8 April 1953) was an Indian industrialist. A man of rare talent and conviction, Seth Walchand Hirachand believed that India could be a world power one day. He dedicated his life to make India self- reliant and utilized his unrelented enthusiasm to empower people and establish new realities to show Indias prowess to the world.Seth Walchand Hirachands life is a living example of management thoughts in practice. It was a life guided by a powerful vision, through which he generated some out-of-the-box strategies, chartering a road ahead with impeccable planning, unparalleled human resource empowerment and rigorous project management. Hailing from a trading community that migrated to Sholapur from Paatan City-North Gujarat in the middle of the 19th century, Seth Walchand Hirachand was born at Sholapur, Maharashtra in a Digambar Jain family engaged in trading and money lending. He matriculated in 1899 but was not interested in the family business, and thus started his entrepreneurial journey. Shri Walchand Hirachand was amongst the better of the second generation of indigenous industrial enterprises in the Indian sub-continent. He took a burning task in his hands of facing the criticisms leveled against Indian businessmen who entered manufacturing business as essentially merchants and moneylenders, who wandered into manufacturing, and that they were more profiteers and rent seekers, than risk takers. Braving the odds, he became a classical Schumpeterian risk taker. He found the railway contracting business to his liking and became a railway contractor for constructions in partnership with a former railway clerk, Laxmanrao Balwant Phatak; the partnership later became Phatak-Walchand private limited. The Competitiveness of Financial Institutions and Centers in Europe $191.46 The Competitiveness of Financial Institutions and Centers in Europe addresses key questions facing European financial markets today. It relates to the dramatic increase in competition between financial centres and institutions under the influence of several factors — the effect of innovation in financial products and technological processes, widespread deregulation and associated re-regulation (prudential rules), the implementation of the single market in Europe and the new strategies of institutions and national financial centres facing more competitive conditions. Major subjects include the transfer of fragility from the real economy to the financial sector, and vice versa, through such channels as booming financial activities, intense competition and greater risks, as in property lending, and also the more cautious policies adopted by financial intermediaries in response to losses in the recent recession. The papers were contributed by members of universities, the private financial sector, national and international policy making communities, and presented at the 18th Colloquium of the Société Universitaire Européenne de Recherches Financières, in Dublin, May 1994. They will be of central importance to policy makers, bankers, financial executives and academics. |

The Modern Bank; A Description of Its Functions and Methods and a Brief Account of the Development and Present Systems of Banking $25.27 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:II GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND METHODS IN BANKING We will not at present undertake to trace the development of the modern bank from the original money-lender or the trader who made the care and use of the money of others an incident of his own business, but take a brief preliminary view of the chief functions of the bank as it is to-day and the methods by which those functions are exercised. It may still be an individual or a private firm, but in its larger significance it has come to be a corporation organized under specific regulations of law, and conducted under public supervision. It requires capital and definite responsibility, and these can be best secured on an adequate scale by incorporation. The need of capital is not merely or mainly to have funds for its business of lending, but to establish its credit, to enable it to command the confidence that will lead men to entrust it with their money, and to give assurance that it can meet every obligation that it assumes. The first business of a bank is to receive deposits, that it may have larger resources than its own capital for making loans, which is to be its chief function in facilitating the operations of production and trade. As the deposits, or rather their equivalent, will belong to its customers and be subject to their demand at any time, it must keep on hand a reserve of cash to meet such demand by paying back without hesitation such sums as may be called for. This is an important use of its own capital. Let us takea hasty glance at the purpose and manner of making loans and see how it leads to increasing deposits and making of them a mass of credits rather than of money. A man in business has to buy and incur large expense before he can sell and get his money back, and he has to give credit and wait for his |

The Public Interest In Regulation $168.87 The concept of the public interest is often used in legal and political discourse, lending an air of legitimacy and respectability to exercises of power. However the term is rarely defined in any meaningful sense. This book considers abstract concepts of public interest from the literature of law, political science, and economics. Using a series of case-studies from Britain and the USA, Feintuck explores how the concept is used in practice. Finally, Feintuck considers the legal forms in which the public interest might be manifested to offer legitimate and effective protection to vulnerable democratic values by the regulation of private power. |

The Trillion Dollar Meltdown $15.42 The sub-prime mortgage crisis is only the beginning; a more profound economic and political restructuring is on its way. According to Charles R. Morris, the astronomical leverage at investment banks with their hedge fund and private equity clients virtually guarantees massive disruption in global markets. The Trillion Dollar Meltdown explains how we got here, and what is about to happen. |
