Visitors Human

Is it ok to feel hatred towards humans as a species?
I really do feel as a species humans are terrible, We know what we are doing to this earth and the life that lives on it but are doing little about it and for what gain. I believe the earth would be better place with out us But then what would the point be in the earth, we believe we own it but theres a lot of things that were here long before us, we are just visitors and will only be here for a short while so i believe we should leave it how it was before we leave if not better.
- Since not all humans are guilty of the atrocities you listed as a reason for your hatred, yet you choose to hate all humans for it, you are a bigot.
Rarely is it OK, or productive, to be a bigot.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind may have reassured us that perhaps we have nothing to fear from alien visitors and E.T. introduced us to a benign extraterrestrial who only wanted to go home, but Kenneth Johnson’s 1983 television miniseries knew better. Visitors who claim to come in peace are revealed … |

V: The Final Battle $5.89 Though followers of current science fiction television series may dismiss V: The Final Battle as a quaint relic from the pre-computer animation days, the six-hour miniseries about an alien invasion of Earth was a ratings juggernaut for NBC in 1984 and should still provide some entertainment for hard-bitten devotees and fans of ’50s-style sci-fi. The Final Battle picks up four months after the shoc… |

Attract Women with Human Euphoria $59.95 Euphoria Pheromone Cologne 1 oz by EyeFive Attract Women with Human Euphoria Human Euphoria Pheromone Cologne is a brand new formula that contains Human Sex Pheromones scientifically designed and proven to attract women. Just as animals use scents to attract the opposite sex, humans respond to pheromones that can greatly increase your chances of being approached and meeting women. This natural aphrodisiac is based on the isolation and synthesis of unique pheromone compounds mixed with essential oils to create a smell that drives women crazy! You will find yourself being approached more often, having women look and smile at you, and feeling more confident and secure. Order Now! How the Pheromones Work Pheromones are naturally occurring chemicals found in animals and humans which elicit sexual behaviors and are used to attract the opposite sex. Scientists have succeeded in identifying, isolating, and recreating this human sex pheromone. These natural pheromones have been well documented to trigger very powerful sexual responses! Unlike fragrances, which are detected by the Olfactory Glands in the nose, Pheromones are detected by the Vomeronasal Organ or VNO. The VNO is located in the Nasal Pit directly under the nose. When the VNO receives a pheromone signal it sends a message to the brain that stimulates the body and creates a subconscious increase in sexual desire. How to Use the Pheromones Pheromones can be worn just as you would wear any cologne. Apply them to your neck, forearms or any other part of your body. They can be worn anytime you are interested in getting attention from the opposite sex or even just to feel the power of being noticed and attracting others. They can be used on a daily basis to gain an edge in business, at school or at any social event. Order Now! What are the ingredients? The pheromones contain Di-Propylene Glycol, Essential Oils, SD40-B Alcohol, Fragrance and pure reagent-grade Human Pheromones. |

A Fatal Vineyard Season $5.99 Martha’s Vineyard is home to ex-Boston cop J.W. Jackson, his adored wife Zee, their toddler Joshua, and newborn daughter Diana. For others, the picturesque vacation spot is a relaxing escape from a world filled with trouble. But there is no escape for Julia Crandel and Ivy Holiday, two Hollywood actresses staying in the Vineyard town of Oak Bluffs. Their arrival has incurred the wrath of a pair of local gangsters, and a deadly stalker from out of the young ladies’ past has found out where they are hiding. Twin hurricanes are about to slam the idyllic island — one a natural climatic disaster, the other an all-too-human catastrophe — and it looks as if J.W. is going to get caught in the middle. And since his conscience won’t allow him to abandon two frightened, helpless visitors to the fury of the coming storm, he stows away his fishing gear, sends his loved ones off-island…and dives headfirst into the tempest. |

A Sense Of Entitlement $26.94 Lying sleepless upon his lavish deathbed in a stale room of old-money opulence, American literary icon Sheldon Harrison battles lung cancer to its dehumanizing end. At his sprawling Martha’s Vineyard estate, family and friends mourn the impending loss of a man dubbed the writer of the century. Among the sullen-faced celebrity visitors is summer intern Drew Engle, an English major at Boston University who is as yet uncorrupted by money and power. In a twist of fate, he is the unlikely recipient of a final request from a semi-conscious Harrison. A simple set of instructions and a safety deposit box key lead Drew to the mountains of Sintra, Portugal. High above the bustling town center on the steep walls of the Moorish Castle, Drew reads an inspired confession that changes his life. A swirling tempest of intrigue follows the revelation, threatening to bury Drew under the weight of his discovery. With members of the fabled family staring into the ghastly abyss of irrelevance, no sacrifice is beyond their savage, entitled claws. A Sense of Entitlement challenges the idea of privilege and interprets the timeless question of human value and those who build the scale. |

An examination of the Leave No Trace visitor education program in two US National Park Service units. $49.99 The purpose of this dissertation was to examine overnight National Park Service (NPS) backcountry visitors’ behavioral intentions to comply with promoted LNT principles as well as their opinions regarding the efficacy of various LNT education delivery strategies. Leave No Trace is the most pervasive outdoor skills and ethics training program addressing human powered recreationists in existence however, empirical investigations into the efficacy and diffusion of the program have been scant to nonexistent.;The study sample was obtained by intercepting visitors at backcountry permit issuing stations in Glacier National Park (GNP) in northwest Montana and Olympic National Park (ONP) in northwest Washington during the summer 2007. Primary study data were collected following a modified Dillman (2007) procedure using mail-back self-administered questionnaire with multiple contacts to increase the response rate. 836 valid addresses were collected and 593 questionnaires were returned providing an overall response rate of 70.9%.;The first manuscript discusses the conceptual foundation, development, cross-validation, and psychometric qualities of the Backcountry Visitor Ethics Scale — Version 1 (BCVES-V1), a research instrument designed to measure attitudinal conformity with the LNT principles for responsible recreation. The resulting measurement model, a second-order three-construct 15-item scale, exhibited satisfactory fit properties across both samples and is largely consistent with the conceptual framework used to develop the measure. The second manuscript utilized an extended version of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TBP) to gauge the theory’s effectiveness in predicting behavioral intentions to comply with LNT principles. The resultant model explained as much as 44.3% of the variance in intentions to comply with promoted practices; however, significant predictors of intentions vary by unit. THE GATE BEAUTIFUL. ‘ At the Gate of the Temple which is called Beautiful’ (Ads in. 2.) King Herod did a more significant thing than he knew, when, in rebuilding the old Jewish Temple, he adorned one of its approaches with such lavish ornamentation that it got the name of the ‘ Gate Beautiful.’ He had no high meaning in it. It was little he cared either for God or Temple. All he thought of was of gratifying the love of show which his Roman education had grafted on his half Bedouin nature. What the Jews thought of it does not appear. Probably the stricter Jews frowned upon it just as the old school believers frowned, when the modern descendants of the Puritans first began to replace the homely meeting-house by the Gothic church. Perhaps, however, they consoled themselves with thinking that it was better for people to go into the Temple by a beautiful gate than not to goin at all; and they were hardly human if, in time, they did not begin to take a certain pride in the gaping admiration of foreign visitors and country pilgrims. Anyway there the porch stood, with its rows of rich Corinthian pillars, glistening with costly marbles and burnished gold. And to the dwellers in Jerusalem it was just the beautiful gate of their temple ; but to the world it has been something more. It has been a suggestive image or parable. The architectural fact has fastened men’s thought upon a spiritual fact. The great temple of the universe has a ‘ gate beautiful.’ Beauty is one of the things which open from the visible phenomena of nature to a higher meaning which is invisible. Appalachian Folkways $44 Appalachia may be the most mythologized and misunderstood place in America, its way of life and inhabitants both caricatured and celebrated in the mainstream media. Over generations, though, the families living in the mountainous region stretching from West Virginia to northeastern Alabama have forged one of the country’s richest and most distinctive cultures, encompassing music, food, architecture, customs, and language. In Appalachian Folkways, geographer John Rehder offers an engaging and enlightening account of southern Appalachia and its cultural milieu that is at once sweeping and intimate. From architecture and traditional livelihoods to beliefs and art, Rehder, who has spent thirty years studying the region, offers a nuanced depiction of southern Appalachia’s social and cultural identity. The book opens with an expert consideration of the southern Appalachian landscape, defined by mountains, rocky soil, thick forests, and plentiful streams. While these features have shaped the inhabitants of the region, Rehder notes, Appalachians have also shaped their environment, and he goes on to explore the human influence on the landscape. From physical geography, the book moves to settlement patterns, describing the Indian tribes that flourished before European settlement and the successive waves of migration that brought Melungeon, Scotch-Irish, English, and German settlers to the region, along with the cultural contributions each made to what became a distinct Appalachian culture. Next focusing on the folk culture of Appalachia, Rehder details such cultural expressions as architecture and landscape design; traditional and more recent ways of making a living, both legal andillegal; foodstuffs and cooking techniques; folk remedies and belief systems; music, art, and the folk festivals that today attract visitors from around the world; and the region’s dialect. With its broad scope and deep research, Appalachian Folkways accurately and evocatively chronicles a w |

Appreciating the importance of parasites: Analyzing and understanding the ecology of parasite-host interactions. $49.99 There is a growing interest in the nature of parasite-host interactions, the role these relationships play in ecological communities, and how human activities alter these associations. Furthermore, because inference about these interactions is usually gained by methods of statistical hypothesis testing, additional importance should be placed on the analysis and interpretation of parasite-host interactions. In this dissertation I address these ideas in three separate but interrelated studies with the three following questions: (1) How do two parasites with complex life-cycles alter the behavior of a novel amphipod host, and how do host and non-host predators respond to infected amphipod prey? In contrast to other studies, I found that two parasites of an endemic amphipod at Montezuma Well had little affect on their amphipod host, and that these associations had little affect on predation rates by both host and non-host predators. Results from this study underscore the importance of further investigating novel parasite-host interactions and placing them in their phylogenetic and evolutionary context. (2) Does human recreation affect spatial patterns of infection in an otherwise natural ecosystem? This study demonstrates that human visitors to Montezuma Castle National Monument alter patterns of waterfowl space use that in turn affect spatial patterns of disease in invertebrate hosts. This is the first study to document such an effect, and I discuss the important implications of this finding. (3) How is hypothesis testing applied in studies of wildlife disease, what conclusions can we make about the relative usefulness of these methodologies, and how can the analysis and interpretation of wildlife disease studies be improved? In this final study I conducted a literature review, computed statistical power for methodologies used in the literature, and re-analyzed published data to provide an example of the advantages of my suggested approach. From the Grand Sable Dunes and Apostle Islands of the south shore to mountain-studded St. Ignace Island and majestic Thunder Cape on the north, the lake is deeply ingrained in North America’s cultural and environmental heritage. Around the Shores of Lake Superior is an ideal trip planner and a unique guide to the region. As author Margaret Beattie Bogue follows the Lake Superior shoreline clockwise through Minnesota, Ontario, Michigan, and Wisconsin, she evokes the richness of local history and highlights hundreds of landmarks and points of interest that surround the lake. Grand Portage, Fort William Historical Park, the Agawa Canyon Pictographs, Isle Royale, the Pictured Rocks, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshores are just a few of the many sites featured, each with a short descriptive history, directions, and contact information. In keeping with the guide’s easy-to-follow organization, all sites are keyed to a foldout map pocketed in the book’s back cover. This book also includes illuminating essays that give context to the natural and human history of the region–the Ojibwe presence, French exploration, industry on and around the lake, and the impact of this history on the natural environment. With more than 200 color and black-and-white images, this updated and greatly expanded Second Edition will enrich the appreciation of the region for both visitors and residents of the upper Great Lakes. |

Art Fairs $42.48 The gallery owner has many qualities, from a small merchant to a dynamic trader. The same counts for his visitors, who show up in all sorts and sizes. Dolph Kessler photographed them in the stands of the large art exhibitions in London, Cologne, Amsterdam, Basel, Paris and Miami Beach. The photographs are fascinating tableaux vivants. The participants in the tableau enter into a relation which is not always very clear but the spectator cannot resist to make his own story. An special part is played by the pieces of art that add an extra dimension. Mise en scenes from the art world gives a view of the world of art exhibitions but at the same time it is about human relations, see and to be seen, natural and unnatural behaviour and massiveness and individuality. The viewer is forced by Dolph Kessler’s photographs to determine his position in these matters. That is its great achievement. |

Bamum $34.95 In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, artists working for the royal court of Bamum, in Cameroon, created elaborate bead-covered thrones and stools, wooden sculptures, masks in human and animal form, architectural carvings, and fine objects in bronze, ivory, and clay. This book focuses on the history, iconography, and meaning of these royal arts and looks at Western collectors who were fascinated by King Ibrahim Njoya (ruled 1886/7 to 1931) and the splendor of the royal court. Visual and written sources–including testimony by King Njoya and his courtiers, and extensive archival records–cast light on the strategies of a monarch who allowed visitors to acquire these arts to enhance the kingdom’’s reputation in distant Europe. The history of Bamum arts thus offers unique perspectives on African creativity and ingenuity, and European ways of collecting. |

There lived long ago in the north-country a man who was so learned that it was said of him he knew every language that was spoken, and all the mysteries of the universe. Now, this wise man had a book, bound in rough black leather, studded with brass nails, and fastened at each corner with iron clasps ; and for further security it was chained to a heavy table which was made fast to the floor. Whenever the wise man desired to read in the book he unlocked it with an iron key, which he always kept hanging at his girdle. He was the only person who ever glanced at its wondrous pages, for they contained secrets that other men might not know. Among other marvels it told how evil spirits might be held in bondage and become the slaves of men ; and in the book were writtenthe names of good spirits, what they did, and how they went about their work secretly, invisible to the human eye. It was a queer old room in which the book was kept, and where the old magician—for that is what the wise man was—passed the greater part of his time. In one corner was a large stone furnace, fitted with a rusty iron grate and a deep copper. On the top of it, and on a row of shelves hanging above, was piled a confused heap of metal crucibles, pipes and tubes twisted into odd shapes, and squat bulging bottles of all the colours of the rainbow. This was the apparatus which the magician used in his experiments. Stuffed snakes, hedgehogs and bats, and bunches of dried plants and grasses hung from the ceiling or were suspended from nails driven into the walls. In the dim light which struggled through the one-barred window these objects could not be clearly seen; this added to the awe which was felt by the few visitors who came at times to |

Buck Shots $12.99 “The normal response to Peter Sutherland’s photographs of deer would probably be a feeling of sadness, or possibly regret. How is it, one might ask, that nature has become so utterly banal? How depressing that wild animals drink out of storm drains and die beside freeways. Yet deer haven’t exemplified wildness and wonder since the days of Robert Burns: one step above squirrels and raccoons, deer have long been a suburban commonplace. I think there are plenty of natural calamities worth getting riled up about and that photographs might even assist us in doing so; but a deer strapped to the top of a mini-van is not one of them, and to picture this is simply to witness another image from the human comedy. “Indeed, I find Peter Sutherland’s photographs to be quite funny. His deer exude an infectious self-serious absurdity, going about their deer-like business regardless of obstacle or inconvenience. Their incongruity is exaggerated to the point where these ordinary animals seem to be nothing less than visitors from another world, transfixed and radiating a cosmic light, with bright, sci-fi eyes that seem about to blaze right out of their heads. With an almost total absence of humans, in Sutherland’s images the deer have inherited the earth.” —Lawrence R. Rinder Having escaped domestication, deer are on their own, rolling with what comes. They can travel in small packs or they can be alone. They grow long coats when it’s cold; they shed and sit in the shade when it’s hot. They can survive on available food in the woods while the more tame ones will eat Doritos out of your had on the side of the road. Peter Sutherland doesn’t hunt but he understands the thrill of the chase. The deer tend to come out at dusk when the light is just right. They sneak around and crossover into suburban lands. The boundaries between man and deer have blurred. They watch us while we watch them. The photographs |

WHATEVER may have been her faults, it is not to be denied that only Mrs. Trevelyan prevented another and more serious explosion of wrath on the part of the Captain against his ne’er-do-weel Marconi operator. As a peacemaker she was beyond criticism. The Captain, pretending to be quite impervious to feminine charms, nevertheless allowed himself to be cajoled and flattered until he not only revoked his orders so far as visitors to the wireless house were concerned, but offered to accompany the lady there himself and explain everything to her. For the Captain, in spite of his appearance, was human, and, as he himself said aloud to himself jn front of the looking-glass in his cabin: “She’s a damned handsome woman! ” No one could possibly dodge this obvious fact. Lily Trevelyan was one of those international beauties who, like the Countess of Warwick, appear on the front pages of the morning dailies whenever there is a dearth of legitimate news. Born in a manufacturing town in eastern Massachusetts, she had escaped from it at an early age, and, with another girl, had taken up the study of art in Paris. Then for about five years she utterly disappeared, only to blossom forth suddenly in London as a dashing society favorite, a bit flamboyant for some of the more conservative, but one who patently had attracted the discriminating eye of royalty. From that time on, Lily Leslie had been the rage. Dukes named horses after her and their jockeys wore her colors ; her photographs appeared in the shop windows; cigars were branded and banded in her honor; and she was followed from one European watering-place to another by a kitchen |

California Natural History Guides $38.33 Islands have always been fascinating places, their separateness evoking a sense of mystery and inspiring a yearning for exploration. California’s islands are unique evolutionary laboratories, places where plants and animals have grown and interacted in isolation for millions of years. This comprehensive book discusses both the human and the natural history of the islands of California, including all eight Channel Islands, Ano Nuevo, the Fatallons, and the islands of San Francisco Bay. It is also useful as a field guide for visitors, and details on reaching the islands are contained in the first chapter. The authors explore the formation of the islands; discuss the history of human habitation, beginning with the Native Americans who first visited the islands 12,000 years ago; and provide a thorough introduction to the marine and terrestrial biotas of the islands. The authors also discuss past damage and ongoing threats to island ecosystems, including devastation caused by the introduction of nonnative animals and plants. Large herbivorous animals in particular have caused considerable damage, since island plants evolved in the absence of herbivores and therefore have no defenses against them.At present all of California’s islands are managed by conservancies and public agencies such as the National Park Service and State Park system, and various environmental organizations are working with them to return the islands to their original condition. |

Excerpt: The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (also Punchbowl National Cemetery) is a cemetery located in Honolulu, Hawaii that serves a memorial to those men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces. Thousands of visitors visit the cemetery each year, and it is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Hawaii. The cemetery is located in Punchbowl Crater (Powaina in Hawaiian), located just north of downtown Honolulu. In ancient times Punchbowl was used as a site for human sacrifices, and p-o-waina means “hill of placing (human sacrifices).” In February 1948 Congress approved funding and construction began on the national cemetery. Since the cemetery was dedicated on September 2, 1949, 34,000 veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean, and Vietnam wars have been interred. The cemetery is now full and a new veterans cemetery has been built and dedicated on the windward side of O’ahu at Kne’ohe. Prior to the opening of the cemetery for the recently deceased, the remains of soldiers from locations around the Pacific Theaterincluding Guam, Wake Island, and Japanese POW campswere transported to Hawaii for final interment. Cosmic Ships: Truth and Lies about UFOs, Other Humanities, and Our Future $12.95 • Based on clear logic, facts, and documented events • Shatters myths about UFOs and alien visitors• Grounded in both solid science and spiritual traditionIn 1950, while discussing flying saucers with three other physicists at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Enrico Fermi asked, “Where is everybody?” as if to say, if there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, why do we have no proof? For sixty years, scientists and the public have debated the answer to this question, yet none have considered what Samael Aun Weor explains in Cosmic Ships: “We are absolutely sure that the cannibals from Africa and the Amazon also felt very annoyed when they could not capture an explorer. Regarding concrete facts about flying saucers, people want to proceed like cannibals, however, it is clear that the crews of those cosmic ships—who know human savagery very well—are not willing to let themselves be ensnared, since they know very well the fortune that awaits them—that is, the intellectual-loafers would make them prisoners, the ships would be seized and used for war, etc.”Logical analysis of the facts demonstrates not only the existence of advanced humanities, but their presence on our planet. There are thousands of documented cases of unexplained ships, hundreds of cases of governments hiding what they know, and decades of an attempt to encourage the populace to discard the facts as fantasy or foolishness. Through stories from his own experience and analysis of well-known events, Samael Aun Weor shows that much of what we believe about extraterrestrials is false, based on fear, stubborn skepticism, and outright lies. He explains how easy it is for advanced humanities to hide from us, and why they must: because we are so consumed by psychological defects like pride, greed, and envy that we are a danger to ourselves and the universe. That is why they are here: to understand why we are such savages, and how |

Costume rhetoric in the works attributed to the Pearl-poet. $49.99 This project analyzes costume rhetoric as visual communication in the Middle English poems attributed to the Pearl-poet. I show how the poet’s descriptions of textiles, clothing and personal adornment communicate significant social data, including age, gender, status, affiliation and family ties. I examine sources as diverse as romances, sumptuary laws, lapidaries, conduct manuals, wills and sermons to identify the contemporary meanings assigned to the material culture depicted in Pearl, Cleanness, Patience and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Following an established medieval tradition, I also examine the body itself as a costume—a garment that manifests the state of the soul within it. I analyze the ways in which physique or physical features—especially deformities or the violation of the flesh—function as visible garb for the inner nature of the incarnate Christ, angelic visitors, or the immortal souls of human beings. These four poems represent the human body as transitory and malleable clothing for the soul, manifesting the deformities and diseases corresponding to the staining filth of sin, the bright loveliness of a soul-garment cleansed through the sacraments of baptism and penance, or the cosmetically artificial beauty that conceals a sullied interior. I argue that the poems of the Pearl-poet corpus challenge simple statements articulating a direct correspondence between inner nature and outer form, and they establish the ability to conform one’s own outer form to one’s inner nature as the criterion for one’s ability to perceive this correspondence—or its absence—in others. |

Costume rhetoric in the works attributed to the Pearl-poet. $49.99 This project analyzes costume rhetoric as visual communication in the Middle English poems attributed to the Pearl-poet. Creationist Museums in the United States: Creation Museum $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Creation Museum is a museum that presents an account of the origins of the universe, life, mankind, and man’s early history according to a literal reading of the Book of Genesis. This museum has been heavily criticized by the scientific and academic communities as promoting “fallacy over fact” and attempting to advance the tenets of a particular religion while rejecting mainstream scientific knowledge. Its exhibits reject universal common descent, along with most other central tenets of evolution, and assert that the Earth and all of its life forms were created 6000 years ago over a six-day period. In contrast to the overwhelming scientific consensus, exhibits promote young Earth creationist claims, including the idea that humans and dinosaurs once coexisted, and that dinosaurs were on Noah’s Ark. The museum exhibits are at odds with the determination of the scientific community that the Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old, and that the dinosaurs became extinct 65.5 million years before human beings arose. The museum has generated criticism by the scientific community, several groups of educators, Christian groups opposed to young Earth creationism, and in the general press. The museum, which is said to have cost $27 million, is privately funded through donations to the apologetics ministry Answers in Genesis and opened its doors to the public on May 28, 2007. Based on projections, the museum anticipated 250,000 paying visitors in its first year of operation. According to AiG, within its first two months attendance surpassed 100,000 visitors by July 21, 2007 and 200,000 visitors on September 20, 2007. They claim that visitor attendance also exceeded first year expectations only 5 months and 5 days after opening, with a total of… More: |

Cultivating Delight: A Natural History of My Garden $0.99 In the mode of her esteemed bestseller A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman’s new book, Cultivating Delight celebrates the sensory pleasures she discovers in her garden.Ackerman delights in her garden through all the seasons. Whether she is deadheading flowers or glorying in the profusion of roses, offering sugar water to a hummingbird or studying the slug, she welcomes the unexpected drama and extravagance as well as the sanctuary her garden offers. She chronicles instances of violence in nature but also intuits loneliness and desire in the clamor of male crickets in the spring. And there is wonderment and marvel as she happens upon a tiny frog asleep inside the petals of a tulip. Visitors to her garden range from botanical explorers of earlier centuries to the nature mystic John Muir to the brilliant British garden writer Gertrude Jekyll. The author’s garden nourishes its creator, who imaginatively returns the favor and seizes privileged moments to leap from science and metaphor to meditation on the human condition. Written in sensuous, lyrical prose, Cultivating Delight is a hymn to nature and to the pleasure we take in it. |

Culture of Anchorage, Alaska: Alaska Zoo, Anchorage Youth Symphony, Fur Rendezvous Festival, Redrum, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra $9.05 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Alaska Zoo, Anchorage Youth Symphony, Fur Rendezvous Festival, Redrum, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Alaska Botanical Garden, Islamic Community Center of Anchorage, Alaska. Excerpt: Alaska Zoo – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Annabelle’s grave, Alaska ZooIn 1966, Anchorage grocer Jack Snyder won a contest offering a prize of “$3,000 or a baby elephant”. He chose the elephant, a female Asian Elephant named Annabelle. Annabelle was initially kept at the Diamond H Horse Ranch, located in the Hillside area of Anchorage and owned by Sammye Seawell, which had the only heated stalls available. With Annabelle’s increasing popularity, Seawell formed a non-profit corporation to build a place “where the public could visit animals and learn about them.” It was incorporated on March 28, 1968 as the Alaska Children’s Zoo, which opened in 1969 with Annabelle and other donated animals. The zoo was located on land adjacent to Seawell’s ranch. The zoo’s name was changed to Alaska Zoo in June 1980. In 1983, a female African elephant named Maggie arrived at the Alaska Zoo as a companion for Annabelle. The zoo attracted some attention, even outside Alaska, in 1994 when Binky, then one of the zoo’s polar bears, injured several visitors who entered his enclosure, famously pacing with an Australian woman’s shoe dangling from his mouth (the current polar bear exhibit is human-proof). In 1997, Annabelle died, leaving her companion, Maggie alone. In 2004, in spite of mounting criticism, Alaska Zoo officials decided to keep Maggie in Alaska for at least three more years, rather than sending her to an elephant sanctuary in a warmer climate, where she could also socialize with other elephants. As of June 6, 2007. She was mo… More: |

Displaying controversy: Evolution, creation, and museums. $49.99 This work explores the role of museum exhibits in the creationist/evolutionist controversy and how different museums make appeals to the public using material objects, including scientific artifacts, images, and the space of museum exhibits. Four different exhibits are included in this study: the Institute for Creation Research’s Museum of Creation and Earth History in Santee, California; the Creation Museum in Kentucky; the American Museum of Natural History’s newly redesigned Hall of Human Biology and Evolution; and the University of Nebraska State Museum’s "Explore Evolution" exhibit. Using rhetorical criticism, I perform an intertextual analysis of the words and images, objects, and spaces of each exhibit, and public responses to them. For the creation science museums, I show how the curators use the rhetorical concepts of arrangement, imitation, and dissociation to convince the public of the truth of creation science. For the evolution exhibits, I look at how the curators use arrangement and prolepsis to convince visitors of the truth of evolutionary theory. Each exhibit employs these rhetorical concepts to create an experiential rhetoric in the space of the museum, to imply both narratives of progress and regress, and to deploy the persuasive power of objects, things, and artifacts in these spaces. Overall, this research illuminates the role of museum exhibits in contemporary American public controversies over evolutionary theory, explores how the public space of a museum exhibit defines and challenges scientific knowledge, and illustrates how space and material objects can function persuasively within the museum context. |

Districts of Lugano: Gandria, Breganzona, Br -Aldesago, Davesco-Soragno, Viganello, Cureggia, Pregassona, Villa Luganese, Carabbia, Barbengo $9.25 Chapters: Gandria, Breganzona, Brè-Aldesago, Davesco-Soragno, Viganello, Cureggia, Pregassona, Villa Luganese, Carabbia, Barbengo, Pambio Noranco, Pazzallo. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 33. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Gandria is a small, picturesque village on the shore of Lake Lugano in Switzerland. The historically protected center (nucleo), which is not accessible by car, attracts visitors from all over the world. With about 200 inhabitants, Gandria is often referred to as an independent town, but since 2004 it has been a district of Lugano. Boat service between Gandria and other towns on the lake is regular, and it is also possible to walk from Gandria to Lugano and other surrounding villages via a publicly maintained footpath hewn into the rock in 1936. This path (now branded the olive path by the Tourism Bureau) between Gandria and Castagnola leads along plantations of olive trees and offers splendid views of the Lake of Lugano. Since Gandria became a part of Lugano, needed infrastructure projects have been carried out, including a sewage treatment plant (operational in May 2010) and ongoing work to place electrical lines underground. Early history: The first lasting human traces on the immediate area around Gandria come from an iron-age people known as the Celts (as of 800 B.C.). A large stone () carved with mysterious signs, probably used for Celtic religious purposes, is located within hiking distance. Local names are also lasting reminders. Gandria sits at the base of Mt. Brè, which means mountain in Celtic. The name of the Lake of Lugano in Italian, Ceresio, could be derived from the Celtic word keresios, a reference to a god of fertility who is always pictured with the antlers of a deer the lakes resemblance to the prongs of an antler can be more easily |
