How to Get What You Want Out of Your Freelance Writer

Good communication makes the world go round.  Let’s face it—wars have been started because of poor communicative ability between world leaders.  In the business world, companies have failed and partnerships have crumbled because of poor communication.  In order to make a business work—yes, your business—you must communicate very well with everybody you come into contact with.

You must communicate with your clients, your customers, your employees, your associates, and yes, even your competition.  Even if you’re kicking someone out of your store after a heated argument, a perfectly clear explanation is still required!

You could say communication is “king”, and a higher ranked king than “content.”  If you cannot communicate with your audience, all the great content in the world won’t mean anything.  The same lesson applies when you are working with a freelance writer and or an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) writing company.  If you are the website owner (or working with a website owner as a web hosting provider) then you may have to outsource some of your writing, marketing and SEO duties to a professional firm.  A professional firm is made up of many freelance writers who can create articles, copy and web content for you.

Explaining Your Vision

When you decide to order an SEO package, or a series of articles for SEO or an article marketing campaign, you will be asked to provide instructions for your project.  This will include the article word count, article topics, the direction of the content and the style or “voice” of the writer.  One of the most common problems we see in the SEO business is that the client expects so much from the SEO firm (and rightly so) but is inevitably disappointed at the end result because it didn’t fit the right “vision.”

When the client pays good money for a series of articles or an eBook, he or she has certain expectations.  Believing he/she is receiving top quality SEO services, the client also believes that the SEO firm (and the freelancer working on the project) has the same vision of the finished product.  A job well done is a job well done, right?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen precisely that way.  Your vision of a completed project might not be the same as a freelancer writer’s vision of a completed project.  A writer must use his or her own creativity to develop the message, this is true.  However, all of these different writers have very different styles, approaches and experiences.  This make for numerous variations on what you might call a “job well done.”

A freelance writer approaches a new task from his/her own perspective.  The writer only knows how to create a project according to the instructions you provide, and according to the type of material he/she has written before.

Therefore, the writer could approach the project with any number of preconceptions—some of which may be misguided.  Let’s say you’re trying to market a web hosting company.  The writer could approach his/her series of articles with any of these preconceived ideas, none of which are “wrong” in general, but may be very wrong for you personally.  For example:

  • A hard sales approach, encouraging the reader to buy, buy, buy!
  • A series of technical articles, meant for experienced web users
  • General interest articles appealing to newbies hosting their first website
  • An objective series, that raises interesting questions and answers them in detail
  • An edgy male voice, designed to appeal to young male demographics
  • An emotive voice, that stirs the emotions (or “heartstrings”) of readers

You have to understand that every sentence you DON’T provide in terms of instructions, is giving a freelance writer a little more “leeway” to interpret your general instructions in whatever way he/she sees fit.  Therefore, if you say something like “choose Your Own topics!”, you can’t be too surprised if a freelancer goes in a direction that you’re not personally happy with.

If you say something like, “I want an edgy voice and controversial stuff…” you can’t be too surprised if a freelancer talks about issues that you (or your targeted audience) is uncomfortable with.  If you tell an SEO company that the word count or the keyword usage is left to the writer’s own discretion, you might be underwhelmed with what comes back to you, because you presumed it would be “more” or “less.”

Be Specific…Nothing is Too Redundant!

This is why we in the SEO writing business encourage our clients to be specific and give us details so that we can prevent misunderstandings.  There is no such thing as being “too redundant.”  If it’s that important to you to get a 3% density, say it three times.  Put the statement in all caps or bold the words.  We don’t take offense to emphasis.  We want to know how important these details are to you!

We don’t presume to “know” exactly what to do, because we work with hundreds of clients every month and they all take very different approaches to their businesses.  What makes sense for a web hosting company (in terms of web marketing) might not make any sense to a used car lot or a restaurant.

Remember, a writer’s experience in writing a series of SEO articles can be very different than your own marketing and researching experiences in your unique field.  Only you know the research you have done.  We encourage you to share this research with us and tell us what you think works and doesn’t work, in terms of communicating your message.

Are there specific topics to avoid?  Is there a major keyword issue that needs to be addressed?  Is in-depth discussion on a central issue more important than covering a variety of topics?  Make these issues clear right away—as soon as you order the SEO package and first make contact with the SEO writing company.

One helpful hint to keep in mind: direct the freelance writer to existing samples or “live” articles that can be used as a reference.  This way, if the writer is in doubt, he or she can simply follow the same examples as set forth in the provided sample.

The key to web marketing success is in proper communication.  You owe this to your audience and to the people you work with.  Good communication is how you get what you want out of your freelance writer.  When everyone is on the same page, and there is little room for “interpretation” of the instructions, there will be fewer problems in reaching a shared goal.

Please, talk to us and let us know your thoughts, concerns and every last minor detail.  This will help us all to more effectively communicate and find more success in 2011!

$14.14

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name “Robert Capa” around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, “cápa” is a Hungarian word meaning ’shark’.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. In 1938, he traveled to the Chinese city of Wuhan to document the resistance to the Japane… More:

John Wilkinson, a successful American entrepreneur, doesn’t know why his first attempt to branch out to the Middle East failed so miserably. Heading home in defeat, John meets Sultan, a chance encounter that changes everything. After hearing John’s story, Sultan recognizes John’s failure didn’t result from a bad business model. Rather, John made the fatal mistake of not understanding and accepting how business is conducted in the Middle East. Sultan invites John back to Oman to try again, this time with guidance, instruction, and proper introductions. With Sultan as his mentor, John quickly learns his hardcharging Western style must surrender to very different values rooted in ancient tribal customs and traditions. A Family Divided

A Family Divided

$20.22

More and more, politicians, religious leaders, and behavioral experts blame the increase in crime, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy in modern society on the breakdown of the family. What these experts may not realize, however, is that the divorce industry fosters this collapse: The courts persist in viewing mothers as the only proper guardians – the primary parents – even in the overwhelming majority of cases that do not involve abusive husbands. Hence, fathers are eased – or shoved – out of their children’s lives. In A Family Divided author Robert Mendelson, a freelance writer, presents the divorced father’s point of view, arguing that fathers are not superfluous and not all of them should be considered deadbeat dads who shirk their parental responsibilities. Moreover, public opinion, the press, and the courts are wrong to believe that men cannot be single parents; that a parental role can be fulfilled through sporadic weekend visits. Mendelson demonstrates that both society’s and the children’s best interests require two active and involved parents, even if they maintain separate residences.

 A Glimmer of Hope

A Glimmer of Hope

$8.11

Luke Rosentino and Claire Bennett are professors at a small southern university. They meet at a time when both their lives are being turned upside down by fate. Claire’s marriage is ending after she finds her husband to be unfaithful. At the same time, Luke’s daughter comes to live with him after her mother’s death. Claire’s husband, Dennis, is struggling with his own demons and decides to kidnap Luke’s daughter with the help of his former lover, Becky. However, Becky has secrets of her own that could jeopardize Dennis’ plan. Police and FBI must intervene before Dennis’ murderous rage shatters all possible glimmers of hope. “A Glimmer of Hope” is a taut, suspense-filled story about anger, jealousy, new beginnings, love, marriage and family relationships. It’s about the choices that we make and how they affect the people around us.Beth Davis earned a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of South Carolina in 2000. George Chetwyn Griffith-Jones (1857-1906) was a prolific British science fiction writer and noted explorer who wrote during the late Victorian and Edwardian age. After writing freelance articles in his spare time, he joined a newspaper for a short spell, then authored a series of secular pamphlets including Ananias, The Atheist’s God: For the Attention of Charles Bradlaugh. While he was on the staff of Pearson’s Magazine, Griffith submitted a synopsis for a story entitled The Angel of the Revolution: A Tale of the Coming Terror (1893). It remains his best and most famous work. As an explorer of the real world he shattered the existing record for voyaging around the world, completing his journey in just 65 days, and helped discover the source of the Amazon River. A History of the Novel in Ants

A History of the Novel in Ants

$6.25

Why a history of the novel in ants? It makes perfect sense because ants live in an almost exclusively female society. And as Ian Watt noted in THE RISE OF THE NOVEL, the majority of eighteenth century novels were written by — as well as read by — women, adding that “the feminine sensibility was in some ways better equipped to reveal the intricacies of personal relationships and was therefore at a real advantage in the realm of the novel.” The prevalence of women as readers and authors of fiction has continued to the present day. Within their all-female society, ants have conflicts, ants have ambitions and disappointments, ants have victories and defeats. Inhabiting an underground fortress of winding, labyrinthine galleries, ants can be gothic or postmodernist as the plot requires. For them the above-ground world of predators and enemies has a painful realism when it is not violently picaresque. Imagine translating Jane Austen into ants: your six-legged heroine will have not one or two but hundreds of gossiping, posturing, romantically and socially ambitious sisters, all striving to get precedence of one another. Or don’t bother imagining it for yourself — just read A HISTORY OF THE NOVEL IN ANTS.Carol Hart is a freelance science writer with a rusty PhD in English Literature. She reads a great many novels and she never steps on ants. This is her first novel.

A Mingled Yarn: The Life of R. P. Blackmur

A Mingled Yarn: The Life of R. P. Blackmur

$39.95

R. P. Blackmur was an American critic and poet, as well as a professor of English literature and creative writing at Princeton University. At the time of his death, he had completed five books and a number of plays and short stories. His poetry mattered most to him and some of it is permanent work. He devoted much of his life to a biography of Henry Adams someone he saw in himself. In his lifetime, he received his share of adulation, but he was not successful in the way that success is commonly measured. In this work, Russell Fraser follows the course of Blackmur's self-declared failed genius. He tells the story of his precocious youth in Cambridge; his eclectic education; his years of poverty and renown as a poet, novelist, freelance music critic, and essayist; his obsessive marriage to artist Helen Dickson; his entangled friendships with T. S. Eliot, Delmore Schwart, Allen Tate, and John Berryman; and his passion for rural Maine on the Tidal Water. He discusses Blackmur's crucial role in the literary magaines of the twenties and thirties; his unique influence as instructor of creative writing; the emotional and professional price he paid for a doubtful security at Princeton University; and the torment of wavering between intellectual inertia and prolific inspiration. With empathy and insight, Fraser shows how the trajectory of Blackmur's career parallels the movements in the American literary scene; the experiments in poetry and fiction; the development of the New Criticism; the writer's conflict between order and anarchy, taxonomy and the full response; and the emergence of the critic as artist. A biography, intellectual history, and literary criticism, A Mingled Yarn unravels Blackmur's complex character and celebrates his great achievement.Russell Fraser is Austin Warren Professor Emeritus of English Literature and Language, University of Michigan. Among his books are Moderns Worth Keeping and Shakespeare: A

Her poems, sketches, and stories began appearing regularly in such periodicals as the Bookman, Munsey’s Magazine, and the National Magazine. Her first novel, Love Letters of a Musician, was widely popular and led to other works. The book begins: The little house was waiting, as it had waited for many years. Grey and weather-worn, it leaned toward the sheltering hillside as though to gather from the kindly earth some support and comfort for old age. Five-and-twenty Winters had broken its spirit, five-and-twenty Springs had not brought back the heart of it, that had once gone out, with dancing feet and singing, and had returned no more.
