Copywriting Careers
Job Change. How do I prepare for these fields?
I have a Master’s degree in English, and although I love teaching at the community college, it is almost impossible to get full-time and adjunct pay is pretty bad.
I need full time work! With benefits!
So does anyone have any information or work in these industries and would a Master’s degree help even though I don’t have the work experience?
Grant writing
Copywriting/Editing
Academic Advising
Legal work (Paralegal, legal secretary)
I’d really like to try these careers, but I ONLY have experience in teaching. When I look at ads for these job (especially legal work) they want someone with at least 5+ work experience plus savvy tech skills. Of course, I’m going to take a couple more computer classes through community ed to brush up on my skills.
Any advice? Anyone in the field? I’d appreciate it.
Here are a few other suggestions, right off the bat. With your Master’s, you could go into Probation, Parole, or Social Work with a state agency. Nice bennies and good training. Plus, with your masters, in those fields, you would probably line up a nice supervisory gig. Of course, you would have to go through training and pass some tests, but this should be no biggie.
With your English background, writing and copy editing for a weekly paper would be up to speed. Check around your community. Plus, at a weekly paper, you would get to try your hand at reporting, and reviewing books and food. It pays to be flexible at a weekly.
Legal work? Paralegal reqires a certificate. Legal secretary requires office experience. Academic Advising reqires state certification as a counselor.
Don’t get down on yourself. Want ads AT BEST only give a tip of the iceberg. If there is something you are interested in, send in your resume.
I know that adjunct stinks. Been that route. With more and more colleges going to Master’s students and adjunct faculty, plus with a recession already here, one local college in my neck of the woods has already stated that they ONLY are interested in PH.Ds or Masters to teach several intro level communications courses. However, more of the smaller colleges like ITT, etc. NEED faculty with English experience, Like YESTERDAY.
If you are willing to move…you’ll be able to do better. But, there is a recession on…and every tick of the market, we are closing in on it being a long one. There are course that are given in grant writing. Also, the GED field is always looking for teachers at the community level. That’s my 02.
