How Can We Sing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land? $98.99 This book brings together the 3 traditions of African, Land and Liberation contextual theologies. It attempts to show how the acquisition of land was influenced by ethnic/racial power relations in pre and post independence Botswana. ”Advancing the kingdom”: Missionaries and Americanization in Puerto Rico, 1898–1930s. $49.99 This dissertation examines the role of Protestant missionaries in Americanizing Puerto Rico from 1898 into the 1930s. It contends that Americanization was a dynamic, contingent, multi-directional, and contradictory process that had unintended consequences. These included the development of insular nationalism and Puerto Ricans’ employment of Americanization’s liberal ideology to make claims against the missionary establishment and the colonial state. Demonstrating that Protestants functioned as an advance guard for the colonial state in the areas of education and health care, it nevertheless argues that many missionaries began to question and then sharply criticized the entire civilizing project because of its harmful effects on most Puerto Ricans’ living and working conditions and on the island’s natural environment. It also argues that, in addition to its disciplinary aspects, the missionary project had emancipatory effects, including an expansion of the public sphere in terms of content and participation and the introduction of new social and occupational roles for women.;By focusing on relations between non-elite actors, this dissertation contributes to understanding how imperial relations were constructed on the ground. ”Cheating the cheaters”: The confidence artist in postwar American literature. $49.99 This project explores the ways in which the confidence artist in post-World War II American literature works to subvert and destabilize a culturally pervasive practice that Martin Heidegger terms “Enframing,” a scientific mode of thought and behavior that objectifies human beings with the ultimate goal of power and domination. Enframing divests its practitioners of the ability to recognize the otherness of the self or the other, an ability upon which the capacities for love and freedom are founded. While Herman Melville’s Confidence Man highlights the dark underside of the ideals of the nineteenth century frontier, the twentieth century confidence artists I discuss draw attention to the destructive potentialities of the “New Frontier” of science as intellectual and material capital. Focusing primarily on works by Flannery O’Connor, Don DeLillo, Ken Kesey, David Mamet, and Han Ong, this project explores the ways the confidence artists in each work undermine this dangerous pattern of technological fundamentalism.;They are paradoxical and ambiguous figures because even while they are experts at human taxonomy, they make their own identity impenetrable and incalculable to their victims. Those being deceived are individuals whose humanity has been eroded by their own habitual practice of Enframing, who, in their calculative thinking, have objectified themselves and others. In their deceptions, these confidence artists expose the hollowness, inadequacy, and hypocrisy of the belief systems of their victims—potentially to the victims themselves. In this sense, they function as restorative agents for their victims. For the writers considered in this study, an apprehension or acknowledgement the otherness, mystery, and incomprehensibility of the self and the other is the precondition to any sort of restoration. ”Donor-driven” neoliberal reform processes, ”democratization” and the production of deforestation in Kenya: The case of Karura and Oloolua forests in Nairobi. $49.99 In sub-Saharan Africa, like most of the developing world, democratization has coincided with neoliberal economic reform. Yet, studies of democratization and neoliberalism tend to remain separate, failing to recognize their complex interconnections, both in their material and discursive dimensions. At the heart of this dissertation research is the question of how these interconnections are manifested in the environments of urban sub-Saharan Africa. The dissertation examines the role that combined processes of implementing neoliberal adjustment programs and electoral democratization in Kenya played in the deforestation of Karura and Oloolua forest reserves. The forest reserves are located in Nairobi, the nation’s commercial and political capital. Both forests underwent accelerated loss of trees and land in the 1990s, a period during which state elites were grappling with early phases of neoliberal reform and electoral democratization in the country. Additionally, the dissertation examines responses from various civil society groups and individuals to the issue of deforestation. Ideas in urban political ecology, debates around relationships between the environment and both processes of democratization and neoliberal economic reform, and discussions of collective action arising from civil society and social movements inform the analysis in this dissertation. The dissertation draws from interviews and discussions conducted with state and city officials, key individuals of various civil society groups, and ordinary Nairobi residents. ”For neatness, true fitting, shape and fashion”: The craft and consumption of stays in eighteenth century America. $49.99 This paper examines the craft and consumption of stays in eighteenth-century America. To date, most costume historians have only gone as far as to describe how women wore them and neglected the question of why. The social and cultural implications of wearing stays are greater than scholars have acknowledged. This thesis pushes the subject further than object analysis of material, construction, the stay making trade and their general use. Their study and contextualization is key to understanding the relationship between the bodies they changed and the social constructs that directed their utilization. It does so by exploring the cultural consequences of wearing the undergarment: understanding the public consumption of women’s “stayed” bodies.;Stays functioned to refine the female body into an ideal physical form. Their almost ubiquitous use among women suggests that stays be considered a symbol of shared cultural values among women; one of personal and social refinement, while at the same time enabling a particular sense of self and social awareness. I show what qualities or practices, particularly sexual qualities and practices, are considered as feminine or womanly in rap music and hip-hop culture and how these qualities and practices are similar to or differ from mainstream gender hegemony. I examine whether and how rap music lyrics construct a hierarchical and complementary relationship between (Black) masculinity and femininity. I ask which feminine meanings and practices are treated as “pariah femininities” and point to features of hegemonic masculinity in hip-hop culture and the broader African American community. Finally, I ask whether and how gendering practices represented in rap music lyrics constitute resistant femininities and challenge White and middle-class gender hegemony.;I created a database of rap songs on platinum albums with an original release date of 1984 through 2000. I randomly selected 450 songs from the sampling frame for content analysis. In general, I find that rap music both reproduces and contests prevailing gender, race, class and sexual ideologies and social structures. My analysis of rap lyrics suggests that many male rappers depict (Black) women as promiscuous sexual “freaks” and “bitches” who have sex with men for money and/or other material goods. In many lyrics, they describe their desire for and engagement in sexual activities with freaks and bitches, but they do not express respect. Some women rappers reproduce gendered and racialized stereotypes in their lyrics as well. Still, other women and men rappers challenge these negative images in their songs and offer alternatives. ”We are all becoming teacher/theorists”: Collaborative inquiry into the intellectual, relational, and political work of learning to teach. $49.99 This study is the result of my work as a teacher educator in an English methods course and a member of an inquiry community I formed with eight of my students, all middle and secondary student English teachers at the University of Pennsylvania. I investigate what was at stake for them in learning to teach English in Philadelphia urban schools in the midst of an aggressive reform agenda, including attempts to improve instruction and student performance through the production and dissemination of mandated curricula calibrated to benchmark exams (Useem, 2005). Through this work, I examine my students’ individual and collaborative inquiries into issues of practice (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009), their interrogation of ideas and discourses of urban teaching, and their construction of their own conceptual frameworks and understandings.;This research contributes to the fields of English education, urban teacher education, practitioner research, and literacy, by critically examining deficit-based instruction models in schools and prevailing understandings of student teachers as ‘novices’; both of these notions inadequately account for the rich array of intellectual and experiential resources that students and teachers bring into urban classrooms. I explore alternative conceptions, analyzing student teachers’ use of sociocultural perspectives on literacy as frameworks for thinking differently about English as a content area and their students’ literacy practices. Through their joint inquiries, this community of student teachers constructed counter-narratives about the promise and potential of urban students, cultivated relational approaches to teaching them, and created emic concepts to address feelings of disequilibrium, conflict, and uncertainty in the classroom. (S)TEM analysis of functional transition metal oxides. $49.99 Perovskite vanadates (AVO3) form an ideal family to study the structure-property relationships in transition metal oxides because their physical properties can easily be tailored by varying the A-site cations. (S)TEM is an ideal tool for this type of study due to its capacity for simultaneous imaging and chemical analysis. Determination of the oxidation state of vanadium in complex oxides have been carried out by electron energy loss spectroscopy. SrVO3/LaAlO3 is then studied both experimentally and theoretically as a prototype system. Extra electrons have been detected on the interface layer, and further proven to originate mainly from a change in the local bonding configuration of V at the La-O terminated substrate surface. Cr-containing stainless steel deposited with a LaCrO3 thin-film layer is a promising interconnect material of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC). Our investigation on its microstructural evolution reveals that the LaCrO 3 thin film plays a role in inhibiting the growth of an oxide layer on the metal surface and thus protects the surface of the stainless steel. Ca-doped LaCoO3 is a promising SOFC cathode material. (S)TEM analysis of functional transition metal oxides. $49.99 Perovskite vanadates (AVO3) form an ideal family to study the structure-property relationships in transition metal oxides because their physical properties can easily be tailored by varying the A-site cations. (S)TEM is an ideal tool for this type of study due to its capacity for simultaneous imaging and chemical analysis. Determination of the oxidation state of vanadium in complex oxides have been carried out by electron energy loss spectroscopy. SrVO3/LaAlO3 is then studied both experimentally and theoretically as a prototype system. Extra electrons have been detected on the interface layer, and further proven to originate mainly from a change in the local bonding configuration of V at the La-O terminated substrate surface. Cr-containing stainless steel deposited with a LaCrO3 thin-film layer is a promising interconnect material of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC). Our investigation on its microstructural evolution reveals that the LaCrO 3 thin film plays a role in inhibiting the growth of an oxide layer on the metal surface and thus protects the surface of the stainless steel. The superior material properties of 4H-SiC make visible-blind, ultra sensitive and low noise UV photodetectors possible.;The major objective of this Ph.D. thesis research is to design and fabricate high performance 4H-SiC photodetectors for low-level UV detection. Schottky photodiodes, avalanche PIN photodiodes and avalanche phototransistors are studied for various applications.;In this study, the first 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode that can fully cover EUV to NUV range has been successfully fabricated. Ultralow leakage current, high quantum efficiency and high UV-to-visible rejection ratio have been achieved. The first 1×16 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode array with very large detection area has been successfully fabricated and characterized. A novel UV spectrographic system using the 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode array is demonstrated with a fine spectrum resolution.;4H-SiC single photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) is studied for UV single photon detection. In this work, many challenging issues including bevel edge termination and ohmic contact have been addressed. The 4H-SiC SPADs show high gain, low dark count rate and good single photon detection efficiency (SPDE). The best 4H-SiC SPAD shows a high counting efficiency of 79% and 32.5% with a dark count rate of 125.3 kHz and 38.8 kHz at -119.4 V and -119 V, respectively. The first 4H-SiC SPAD array has been successfully fabricated and characterized. Only 1 pixel out of 33 pixels shows high leakage and high dark count rate. For all the good pixels working at -119.5V, the gain is greater than 10 6, the dark count rate is less than 100 kHz and the SPDE is more than 2%. The proton irradiation impact to 4H-SiC single photon avalanche diodes is investigated for the first time.;A novel 4H-SiC avalanche phototransistor structure is also studied in this research.
