The Leader was an attempt to extend the life of steam traction on Britain’s railways by eliminating many of the operational drawbacks associated with existing steam locomotives. It was intended as a replacement for the ageing fleet of M7 class tank engines still in operation on the Southern Railway (SR). Design work began in 1946, and development continued after the nationalisation of the railways in 1948, under the auspices of British Railways (BR). The Leader project was part of Bulleid’s desire to modernise the steam locomotive based on experience gained with the Southern Railway’s fleet of electric stock. Bulleid considered that attitudes towards the labour-intensity of steam operation had changed during the post-war period, favouring dieselisation and electrification. The manuscript is composed of two different cartularies that were made at different times and were later bound together. The first cartulary was composed at the end of the 10th or beginning of the 11th century. The second section was compiled by Hemming and was written around the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century. Traditionally the first section is titled the Liber Wigorniensis, and is collection of charters and other land records, most of which are organized geographically. The second section, Hemming’s Cartulary proper, combines charters and other land records with a narrative of the losses of property by the church of Worcester. The two works are bound together in one surviving manuscript which is the first surviving cartulary from medieval England. A major theme of the work is all the losses suffered by Worcester at the hands of royal officials and local landowners. Included amongst the despoilers are kings such as Cnut, William the Conqueror, as well as nobles such as Eadric Streona and Urse d’Abetot. The college was founded in 1428 as a Benedictine hostel, in time coming to be known as Buckingham College, before being refounded in 1542 as the College of St Mary Magdalene, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Magdalene College has some of the grandest benefactors including Britain’s premier noble the Duke of Norfolk, the Duke of Buckingham and Lord Chief Justice Sir Christopher Wray. However the refoundation was largely the work of Sir Thomas Audley, Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII. Audley also gave the College its motto garde ta foy keep thy faith, in Old French. Audley’s successors in the Mastership and as benefactors of the College were however prone to dire ends; several benefactors were arraigned at various stages on charges of high treason and executed. The College’s most famous alumnus is Samuel Pepys, whose papers and books including love letters from Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn were donated to the College upon his death, and are now housed in the Pepys Building. The College boasts a portrait of the famous diarist by Sir Peter Lely, which hangs in the Hall. Magdalene is noted for its ‘traditional’ style, boasting both a well-regarded candlelit formal hall (held every evening) and the distinction of having been the last previously all-male College in Oxford or Cambridge to admit women in 1988 (Oriel College was the last in Oxford, admitting women in 1985). The former school motto was “Dominus Mihi Adjutor” meaning “Lord, give me counsel”. The first foundation deed set up by Bishop John Vesey in 1527 provided an endowment from property income of £7 a year and twenty-one people were appointed Trustees to manage the school and pay a fit and proper person to teach Grammar and Rhetoric. He was succeeded as master mason by William Aytoun, who was succeeded in turn by John Mylne. In 1676, Sir William Bruce drew up plans for the completion of Heriot’s Hospital. His design, for the central tower of the south façade, was eventually executed in 1693. The school is a turreted building surrounding a large quadrangle, and built out of sandstone. The foundation stone is inscribed with the date 1628. The intricate decoration above each window is unique (with one paired exception – those on the ground floor either side of the now redundant central turret on the west side of the building). Due to the current situation an action group called the Save the Old Hall Action Group or SOSAG has been set up. Its battle to save the hall has been reported in the local press. The credulous believe the Old Hall to be haunted. It has also been recorded as possibly being the most haunted hotel in England and has been investigated by the Most Haunted team as well as individual paranormal teams such as the Xmotu Team. Room 2 is said to be haunted by a small boy called Matthew and was used as a private room when the building was run as a hotel. It has often been compared by scholars to Descartes ‘ Discours de la methode (1637).Yacob wrote Hatata as an investigation of the light of reason. Yacob is most noted for this philosophy surrounding the principle of harmony. He asserted that an action’s morality is decided by whether it advances or degrades overall harmony in the world. Excerpt: Achille et Polyxène (Achilles and Polyxena ) is a tragédie lyrique containing a prologue and five acts based on Virgil ’s Aeneid with a French libretto by Jean Galbert de Campistron . The opera ’s overture and first act were composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully , who died from a conducting injury before he could complete the score. The prologue and the remaining acts are the work of his pupil Pascal Collasse who finished the work on on March 22, 1687, eight months after Lully’s death. The opera was first performed at the Palais Royale in Paris on November 7, 1687.Analysis of the libretto and music The libretto for this opera differs from those of Lully’s earlier works with Philippe Quinault . Typically, Lully would begin his operas with a lively prologue, but this work has a somber prologue in which the Muses lament the king’s desire for military expansion. Another difference is the tragic and somber ending of this opera in Act V. Lully usually ended his operas with a rousing ensemble number but this opera closes with the suicide of the heroine. The end of Act IV, the wedding scene, does contain a vibrant ensemble number at its close which would be more in keeping with a typical finale of one of Lully’s opera.
