How to Give Feedback to Manage Performance
Receiving feedback on your effort, your attitude or your performance is the way that you learn, improve or are motivated to maintain a good performance. Giving feedback effectively and frequently is a key requirement of the role of Manager or Supervisor. Giving and receiving feedback should be a normal part of the Leader and Team Member relationship, a process that both parties understand and accept. It is best practice for the Supervisor to begin giving feedback as part of the initial training period, and to continue this in regular performance coaching sessions throughout the employee’s career.
Giving Positive Feedback
Positive feedback can be given any time, either in public or private. Positive feedback is where we praise a desired attitude, behaviour or performance. The effect of positive feedback is that the person is encouraged to repeat this behaviour and is also motivated to improve. It also builds self confidence and self esteem in the Team Member.
The reverse is also true! Lack of positive feedback is discouraging, demotivating and will lead to a poor performance level. The employee gets the impression that no-one cares whether they do well or not, and that their work has no value!
Giving Constructive Feedback
The other type of feedback is Constructive Feedback, or Corrective Feedback. Again, this is essential to performance and motivation. Do not think in terms of NEGATIVE feedback as this is not a useful thought. The aim is not to point out the negative or the bad. If you do this, you will find that the person does not improve. You will find yourself saying the same things over and over again.
Giving constructive feedback is about TRAINING the other person to change or improve. If you do this well, you training is successful and will see the desired result. Giving constructive feedback is about identifying an area for improvement and working out solutions to improve or correct this. In giving the feedback, first identify the current goal or task and why this is important to the Company and to the role. Secondly, state clearly the undesirable attitude, behaviour or performance, with factual evidence. Thirdly, state the desired attitude, behaviour or performance, or better still, ask encouraging questions to help the other person make constructive suggestions. Lastly, work with them to put a strategy in place for achieving the desired goal.
Guidelines for giving Feedback Effectively
- Understand that the feedback is primarily a training need. Be aware that you are the supervisor, and are ultimately responsible for this staff’s behaviour. This feedback is aimed at improving knowledge and behaviour.
- The key is to talk about the behaviour, performance or attitude rather than the person.
- Have a good working knowledge of Your Own learning style and the other types of learning styles. This will help you avoid the pitfall of explaining in a way only YOU would understand. Other people are not always like you!
- Know your Team Member, their personality style and their unique learning style – Are they a visual, verbal, reading & writing, tactile? Do they have language and cultural complexities?
- Know your own limitations – If you are giving feedback on a volatile situation, make sure you can recognize your own emotions, and are aware that you may need to calm down before feedback.
- Give constructive feedback in private – Never give constructive feedback in a group. You would not want to receive it in front of your staff!
- Always start with positive – When giving feedback you always start with at least two positive observations. This will start the meeting off on a positive note.
- Look at the individual – make eye contact, don’t avoid. If you do, they may question the validity of your session.
- No apologies, do not apologize for their actions that need correction. Don’t say, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but…”
10. Give constructive feedback in an honest and diplomatic way – that is, while pinpointing the target behaviour, state the constructive measures to change the behaviour. Remember, constructive feedback is a means to improving situations by finding a solution to the problem. Give a due date for follow up. The point is to teach a new skill where there was a deficiency.
11. End with a positive – If it was a particularly lengthy/ gruesome session, interact with the staff to make sure things are ok. Be sure that you have checked in with them before you leave for the day. You want to make sure they are not going home disappointed.
12. Ask if they have any questions – if you have given a feedback session, you may not have realised that you were the only one talking for quite some time. Always give the staff the opportunity to seek further knowledge or assistance.

Moreover, the population of women offenders has risen at a particularly fast rate, doubling since 1990.;The purpose of this study was to add to the information about the experience of women related to re-entry into community life, post-incarceration. A basic qualitative study was undertaken utilizing one-on-one semi-structured/informal interviews, and focus group interviews. Interview tapes were transcribed and analyzed with themes coded and categories identified. Once completed, the themes and categories were presented to study participants to obtain feedback on accuracy of interpretation. Conclusions were drawn upon comparison and analysis of data from within and between project participant groups.;Study results suggest there is a positive relationship between the degree of post-secondary education held by a woman, and her ability to deal successfully with the stresses and emotional trauma of incarceration and release. Excerpt: The Airman Battle Uniform (ABU ) is the new service-distinctive camouflage battledress uniform for the United States Air Force . It is currently in full production and is expected to completely replace the Battle Dress Uniform by close of Fiscal Year 2011. History The first prototype of the ABU was unveiled in the summer of 2003, based on the Vietnam -era tiger stripe pattern. The early uniform prototypes consisted of trousers, an embroidered undershirt, and a blouse. The camouflage pattern, developed by Tiger Stripe Products and based upon their popular copyrighted Original Vietnam Tiger Stripe was a blue/gray, tiger stripe pattern.After months of “wear testing,” Air Force officials revised the color scheme and camouflage pattern due to feedback received from Airmen. The new elementary semi-pixelated tiger pattern would trade its dominant blue overtones for a more subdued palette, which still includes some blue tones. However few of the functional recommendations made by Airmen in the field were implemented into the uniform which remains very similar in makeup to the older BDU style uniforms. This has been a subject of many complaints from Airmen returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan who had been wearing the U.S. Army-issued Army Combat Uniform (ACU) as a temporary issue uniform. These complaints include the ABU’s inability to keep Airmen cool while working in desert conditions due to the thickness of the material (13 ounces) and large interior “map” pockets, lack of storage space and the low ease of use with government issue personal body armor. While not officially recommended, USAF Airmen can cut the pockets out of the inside of the blouse |

Arctic Front: Deluxe Edition $19.99 In November 1939 over a million Soviet troops began an invasion of Finland defended by 160000 soldiers. The Finns lacked artillery tanks and aircraft but made up for it with sisu ? Finnish for fighting spirit. The Winter War lasted for four months but Finns fought the Soviets again in the Continuation War of 1941-1944 and fought the Germans in the Lappland War of 1944. Arctic Front Deluxe Edition is a Panzer Grenadier supplement adding the Finnish army to the game series. It is not playable by itself but requires ownership of Eastern Front to play most of the scenarios and Road to Berlin and Battle of the Bulge to play all of them. It’s a revised version of the original Arctic Front supplement released in 2002 the very first supplement to the Panzer Grenadier system. All of the previous 20 scenarios have been thoroughly revised to take advantage of map boards and playing pieces not available then and with five more years of design experience and player feedback. And there are 20 more new scenarios as well plus background articles and order of battle charts in a 64-page book just like the popular Sinister Forces and Fronte Russo. The playing pieces have not changed but there are twice as many of them to support larger scenarios. The Finns have outstanding morale and very good leadership. But their support weapons are lacking and the Finnish side usually has very little artillery and few anti-tank guns or other such pieces. Finland?s strength lies in her infantry and these troops are very good indeed. Some of them actually sport anti-tank factors representing the deadly 20 mm Lahti-Saloranta anti-tank rifle. In addition to the typical infantry and machine gun platoons found in most armies the series has covered so far the Finns also have ski commandos (the feared Sissi) and good cavalry.
